The Southern Oregon University soccer team will have three chances to get their first win this weekend in a mini-tour of Southern California that spans four days.

The first opportunity presents itself in the form of Vanguard University, which returns seven starters from a team that went 8-6-4 and held a No. 10 NAIA ranking last year, as the Raiders (0-1-0) will take on the Lions in Costa Mesa, Calif. at 7 p.m. Thursday.

After a day off on Friday, the Raiders will finish their trip with stops at Westmont College Saturday at 1 p.m. and Concordia University of Irvine at 2 p.m. Sunday. Both Westmont and Concordia landed on the NAIA preseason top-25 poll at the No. 13 and No. 22 positions, respectively.

After three weeks of hitting each other, the Southern Oregon University football team is happy to be heading to Butte, Mont. to face Montana Tech in the season opener for both teams Thursday night.

“The kids are ready to start hitting somebody else,” SOU Head Football Coach Steve Helminiak said. “We’ve got a hungry football team right now and we are excited to play Tech again.”

Last year’s season-opening matchup in Ashland resulted in a 32-30 Montana Tech victory. In that game SOU scored 20 fourth quarter points and went for the tie on a two-point conversion with 34 seconds to play and was unsuccessful.

Dominican University scored a pair of second half goals to knock off Southern Oregon 3-1 today at University Field in Ashland.

The match was the season opener for both Southern Oregon and Dominican, which had received votes in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 poll.

The 12th-ranked Southern Oregon University volleyball team again hung tough but didn’t have enough as top-ranked Fresno Pacific scored a 25-18, 25-19, 25-20 victory today in the finale of the Raider Classic at McNeal Pavilion.

Fresno Pacific wrapped play with a perfect 4-0 mark. SOU is 1-2, which both losses coming to Fresno Pacific.

Lisa Schilling and Julie De Jager both had eight kills to lead Fresno Pacific. Samantha Yutzie finished with six kills for SOU. Maggie Rivers had a match-high 14 digs.

Top-ranked Fresno Pacific won the battle of ranked teams tonight, scoring a 25-18, 25-16, 25-20 victory over 12th-ranked Southern Oregon University in match four of SOU’s Raider Classic at McNeal Pavilion.

Fresno Pacific finished Day 1 with a perfect 2-0 mark, while SOU sits at 1-1. Fresno Pacific takes on Simpson University at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and then Fresno Pacific and SOU play in the finale at Noon.

Brittany Pierce led Fresno Pacific with 12 kills and Tarin Tartaglia had a match-high 38 assists. Freshman Kalista Harrison led the Raiders with eight kills and Sarah Holgen finished with six kills.

The 12th-ranked Southern Oregon University volleyball team opened up the 2008 season with a 25-7, 25-18, 25-17 victory over Simpson University today in the second match of the Raider Classic.

Top-ranked Fresno Pacific knocked off Oregon Tech 25-14, 25-15, 25-14 in the first match. Oregon Tech plays Simpson at 5 p.m. and SOU hosts Fresno Pacific at 7:30 p.m.

A week away from opening the 2008 Season, the Southern Oregon University football team has ended preseason camp and now is in game-week mode.

According to Head Coach Steve Helminiak, the final scrimmage on Tuesday provided a chance to see how his guys would respond to some typical on-field situations.

“We stayed healthy, which was real important,” said the third-year head coach. “Everything was pretty basic and we got what we wanted done. Some guys stepped up, some didn’t.”

One season and five graduates removed from a 26-6 record that resulted in a share of the conference title, Josh Rohlfing and his Southern Oregon University volleyball team is ready to make another run at the NAIA National Tourney.

Their run begins this weekend when the 12th-ranked Raiders host the inaugural Raider Classic featuring Oregon Tech, Simpson University and, last year’s NAIA National Champion and current NAIA No. 1, Fresno Pacific.

Longtime Southern Oregon University coach Gail Patton has announced that she is retiring as Head Women’s Tennis Coach at the University.

Patton has coached tennis at SOU for the last 10 years and has coached overall at SOU for 15 years.

“This was a hard decision,” said Patton, who will continue teaching tennis in the Rogue Valley. “Coaching is in my blood. I put my heart and soul into coaching, not just here, but every place I’ve coached.”

The Southern Oregon University volleyball team opens up 2008 ranked 12th in the today’s NAIA Preseason Top 25 poll.

The Raiders return two All-Americans (senior Mia Wortel and junior Lindsey Stone) from last year’s 26-6 team that finished the year ranked 10th, but also are without five graduated seniors.

Fresno Pacific, a team SOU hosts Friday and Saturday at McNeal Pavilion as part of the Raider Classic, is ranked No. 1 after winning the National Championship last year.
