Final Home Weekend Key For SOU Women

2/4/2010 11:50:10 AM

With only five conference games left in the season, the Southern Oregon women's basketball team is set to play its last pair of home games this upcoming weekend.

The Raiders (16-8, 5-8) will face Northwest (13-7, 9-3) on Friday followed by Evergreen State (8-15, 4-8) on Saturday. Both games will take place at McNeal Pavilion with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.

For Southern Oregon's five seniors it will give them one last chance to play in front of their fans and two wins would be a satisfying way to sign off their SOU careers.

Seniors Ashley Baker (Grand Junction, Colo./Fruita), Jacki Speer (Centralia, Wash./Centralia), Keri Nakamura (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute), Emily Brookins (Central Point, Ore./Crater) and Chelsea Winner (Central Point, OR/Cascade Christian) have all played key parts in the program's success over the past few years while also raising the bar for future generations.

“They have set the foundation for this program and in the meantime have re-wrote the record books,” head coach Lynn Kennedy said. “In the past four years, they have been part of 88 wins and two national tournament appearances.”

Besides a strong showing on the court over the years, Southern Oregon's seniors have also maintained high standards in the classroom maintaining over a 3.2 GPA and with each one set to graduate.

“I'm extremely proud of all of them,” Kennedy stated.

Even with graduation in sight, Southern Oregon will be relying on their senior members this weekend.

The Raiders lost to Evergreen earlier this season, 70-61, and managed to edge a win over Northwest, 68-65.

“Their team plays hard and they are very aggressive on the defensive end,” Kennedy said of Northwest. “We have to match their intensity if we want to have success.”

This weekend will go a long way as the Raiders look to cement a postseason berth.

The Raiders are one of four teams, separated by one game for the sixth, seventh and eighth spots in the playoff hunt. The top eight teams go the Cascade Conference postseason tournament.
