Raiders Pick Up Five More Event Titles Friday at CCC Championships

KLAMATH FALLS –
Southern Oregon earned five more event titles Friday afternoon on the second day of the 2012 Cascade Collegiate Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Oregon Tech's John F. Moehl Stadium.

With two days of competition in the books, defending champion Concordia (Ore.) continues to lead both the men's and women's team leaderboards, while Southern Oregon ranks second in the men's rankings and sixth on the women's side. Concordia's 149 points lead the men, with SOU at 116 and Eastern Oregon in third with 80. In the women's rankings, CU has 165 points, with College of Idaho's 105 placing second and Eastern Oregon in third at 83, while SOU has 32 points. The championships will conclude Saturday, with competition beginning at 11 a.m.

Jonz Olander (Grants Pass, Ore./Grants Pass) broke the meet record and set a new personal-best time in the 400, winning the event in 47.92 seconds. Eric Avila (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista) won the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:01.35, with Matt Battaglia (Salinas, Calif./Salinas) less than a second behind at 4:02.25 to take third and earn all-conference honors.

The women's 4x100 relay team set a new program record with a time of 48.15. The team of Amelia Maguin (Fernley, Nev./Fernley), Nicole Leaf (Eagle Point, Ore./Eagle Point), Angelica Cahee (Oroville, Calif./) and Mikayla Garrard (Klamath Falls, Ore./Mazama) finished third in the event to earn all-conference recognition. The men's 4x100 relay team, consisting of Sullivan Stevens (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs), Beau Bridge (Placerville, Calif./Union Mine), Brandon Ritchie (Grants Pass, Ore./Grants Pass) and Jonz Olander (Grants Pass, Ore./Grants Pass), took the event title with a time of 41.75.

Stevens earned all-conference honors in three events, including his spot on the championship relay team. He also won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.94 and finished third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.03.

Four Raiders placed among the top five in the 3000-meter steeplechase, led by event champion James Johnstone (Lake Arrowhead, Calif./Rim of the World). Johnstone finished the race with a time of 9:37.59, with Scott McIntyre (Redding, Calif./Ponderosa) earning all-conference honors with a third-place finish (9:42.35), followed by Dennis McCaffrey (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) (fourth, 9:44.92) and David Sherman (Finn Rock, Ore./McKenzie) (9:45.85).

In all, the Raiders concluded the day with five event championships and nine all-conference performances.
