“Everyone competed very hard, and we had season bests for both the men and the women,” SOU head coach
Grier Gatlin said. “We won all but one of the distance races over the weekend on the men's side, but we just didn't have the depth to pull out the team title despite all of our great performances.”
Jonz Olander (Grants Pass, Ore./Grants Pass) picked up his second individual championship of the meet, following up his meet record in Friday's 400-meter race with a title in the 200-meter dash. Olander finished the race in 22.12 to beat out teammate
Beau Bridge (Placerville, Calif./Union Mine) (second, 22.37) and was named the men's Track Athlete of the Meet.
“Jonz had an amazing weekend,” Gatlin said. “He's a great athlete and teammate.”
Matt Battaglia (Salinas, Calif./Salinas) clinched the title in the 800-meter run, finishing the race in 1:55.08.
Max Perry (Florence, Ore./Siuslaw) earned an NAIA automatic qualifier in the shot put, placing second with a career-best throw of 58-2. The men's 4x400 relay team improved on its NAIA auto qualifying time with a second-place finish at 3:15.12, the second-fastest time in SOU history.
Seena Frantz (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) and
Alexandra Rudd (North Bend, Wash./Mount Si) finished second and third in the women's 5000-meter, and the women's 4x400 relay team finished second.
Mikayla Garrard (Klamath Falls, Ore./Mazama) placed third in the 200-meter dash and
Amelia Maguin (Fernley, Nev./Fernley) finished third in the 400-meter hurdles as both earned all-conference honors.
James Johnstone (Lake Arrowhead, Calif./Rim of the World) and
Eric Avila (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista) placed second and third in the men's 5000-meter run to give the Raiders 12 all-conference performances Saturday. For the weekend, Southern Oregon earned nine individual championships and 24 total all-conference performances.
Southern Oregon will return to action in two weeks when the Raiders travel to Marion, Ind., for the NAIA National Championships.
