Raiders Roll In Opener

The 19th-ranked Southern Oregon women's basketball team forced 46 turnovers and en route to a 112-43 rout of Pacific Union tonight in the 2008-09 season opener at McNeal Pavilion.

The Raiders are now 1-0 and travel to NCAA Division I Utah for an exhibition matchup on Nov. 8. Pacific Union fell to 0-1.

Preseason Cascade Conference MVP Jacki Speer (Centralia, Wash./Centralia) led the Raiders with 17 points. Junior Whitney Scott (Tumwater, Wash./Black Hills) finished with 15 points, while Carly Wood (Sacramento, Calif./Bella Vista) finished with 14, Krystal Smith (Olympia, Wash./River Ridge) with 12, Emily Brookins (Central Point, Ore./Crater) with 11 and Rhiannon Dickison (Redding, Calif./Anderson) 10 points.

Carla Bartlett had 15 points to lead Pacific Union.

The Raiders wasted no time putting the game away. SOU led 17-0 after a pair of Scott free throws with 17:09 to play in the opening half.

Scott then hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to 24-7 with 13:03 to play in the first half and Speer capped SOU's scoring in the first half with a layup and the Raiders were up 54-24 at halftime.

The Raiders left no doubt with a 20-1 run to open the second half, capped by a Dickison 3-pointer with 14:48 left in the game.

SOU shot 56 percent for the game, including a 64 percent effort in the second half. The Raiders also hit 62 percent of their 3-pointers.

Junior Ashley Baker (Grand Junction, Colo./Fruita) led the Raiders with nine rebounds and four steals. Lindsey Scheffler (Castle Rock, Wash./Toutle Lake) finished with a game-high eight assists.
