Jacki Speer (Centralia, Wash./Centralia) recorded her second straight double-double to lead Southern Oregon to a 72-64 victory over Holy Names tonight in the annual Coming Attractions Theatres Women's Basketball Classic.
Southern Oregon is now 5-0 on the season and Holy Names fell to 2-4 on the season. On Saturday, Oregon Tech faces Holy Names at 4 p.m. and Southern Oregon takes on Menlo at 6 p.m. Menlo defeated Oregon Tech in double overtime in the opener Friday night.
Speer led the Raiders with 28 points and 12 rebounds. The Cascade Conference Presesaon Player of the Year finished 16 of 18 from the free throw line in a game that featured 68 free throws.
While Speer had the stats, it was
Emily Brookins (Central Point, Ore./Crater) that got the Raiders going.
After the Hawks had pushed the lead to 11 at 49-38, Brookins hit a free throw to cut the lead down to 10.
Brookins then went to work on the boards and got the Raiders out and running. A run that included a 3-pointer by
Carly Wood (Sacramento, Calif./Bella Vista) and a layup by Speer cut the lead Hawks lead to 53-48.
Brookins then rebounded a Speer miss and scored on the putback to cut the lead to 53-50 and again on the next possession Brookins again came away with an offensive rebound and layup to get the Raiders to within one at 53-52 with 7:31 to play.
Speer then hit a pair of free throws to give SOU the lead at 54-53 and they never looked back.
“Emily gave us the extra spark,” SOU Head Coach
Lynn Kennedy said. “She got us offensive rebounds and then on the defensive end shut down (Raquel) Hyche. She got us going.”
Brookins finished with nine points and seven rebounds. Senior
Rhiannon Dickison (Redding, Calif./Anderson) was the other Raider in double-digits with 12 points and she also added six rebounds.
Britni Ronolo led Holy Names with 18 points and eight rebounds.
