South Dakota scored 31 points in the first quarter and cruised to a 37-0 victory over Southern Oregon this afternoon in Vermillion, S.D.

The NCAA Division I Coyotes improved to 5-4 on the season. The NAIA Raiders dropped to 3-6. SOU ends the 2008 season next Saturday at Eastern Oregon.

South Dakota wasted no time getting things going against the Raiders.

The Coyotes scored on their first five possessions and six of their first seven.

The first score came on a 30-yard field goal following an SOU fumble. The Raiders got the ball back and again turned it over as a result of a fumble and this time Chris Ganious ran it in from 10 yards out for a 10-0 lead with 11:57 still to play.

Two SOU punts resulted in two more USD scores and a 24-0 lead. The Coyotes final score in the first quarter was the result of a blocked punt and a 10 yard return by Dion Price and a 31-0 lead.

South Dakota's final score (and the game's final score) came on a Ganious 15 yard run with 5:19 to play.

The Raiders had two chances to score at the end of the second quarter. Senior kicker Corey O'Neill (Medford, Ore./South Medford) had a 56-yard attempt blocked with 36 seconds left and then after the Raiders got the ball back, O'Neill missed a 44 yarder.

SOU senior running back Marlon Rosales (San Jose, Calif./Santa Teresa) went over 100 yards for the fifth time this year with 141 yards. J.C. Hunsaker (Adin, Cailf./Big Valley) completed 18 of 32 passes for 133 yards, but was sacked three times and threw two interceptions.

Thomas Sandoval (Santa Rosa, Calif./Piner) led the SOU defense with nine tackles.

Ganious led USD with 121 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
