Baldwin Carries SOU Past Azusa

Southern Oregon sophomore Brandon Baldwin (Palo Cedro, Calif./Foothill) rushed 44 times for 278 yards and the Raiders scored 20 straight points to score a 20-13 victory over Azusa Pacific tonight at Azusa, Calif.

Southern Oregon snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory and improved to 2-4 on the season. Azusa Pacific dropped to 1-6 on the season.

The Cougars jumped on the board early in the first quarter with a Chris Brown touchdown run and a 34-yard Ben Hansen field goal for a 10-0 lead.

Tyler Crowley (Palo Cedro, Calif./Bishop Quinn) cut the lead to 10-3 at the half with a 24-yard field goal and the third quarter was all SOU.

Paul Sweeney (South San Francisco, Calif./Sared Heart Cathedral) connected with Cole McKenzie (Red Bluff, Calif./Red Bluff) from 19 yards out to tie the game at 10-10 and after a turnover, Baldwin cashed in from 14 yards out to give tgeh Raiders the lead for good at 17-10. Crowley added a 26-yard field goal with 4:15 to play.

Baldwin averaged 6.3 yards per carry and now had 848 yards on the season. The 44 rushing attempts are the second most in school history and the 278 yards are the third most in school history.

McKenzie caught four passes for 60 yards.

Defensively, Justin Akau (Makawao, Hawaii/King Kekualike) had eight tackles to lead SOU. Gary Boubon (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde), Randy Tyler (Diamond Bar, Calif. /Diamond Bar), Thomas Sandoval (Santa Rosa, Calif./Piner) and Isaac Hernandez (Fresno, Calif./Caruthers) all had six tackles.

Brown led Azusa with 90 yards rushing.

SOU travels to Humboldt State next Saturday.
