Jacki Speer (Centralia, Wash./Centralia) continued her assault on the Southern Oregon record book as she led the 18th-ranked Raiders past Holy Names 82-79 in overtime tonight at McNeal Pavilion.
Southern Oregon improved to 4-0 on the season with the victory. Holy Names dropped to 2-2 on the season.
Speer finished with her fourth straight double-double with 22 points and 28 rebounds. The 28 rebounds sets a new school single-game record and she also moved into second all-time in rebounds with 996 for her career.
Krystal Smith (Olympia, Wash./River Ridge) and
Emily Brookins (Central Point, Ore./Crater) also finished with double-doubles. Smith had 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Brookins had 11 points and 10 boards.
Lindsey Scheffler (Castle Rock, Wash./Toutle Lake) finished with 11 points.
Holy Names got 11 points from Lesley Vodiscka.
The Raiders struggled through the first half, a first half that took 53 minutes to complete, featured 36 turnovers and 28 fouls.
Southern Oregon shot 6-for-29 (20 percent) in the first half and trailed 35-28 at the half.
In the second half, the Raiders warmed up hitting 37 percent from the field.
Holy Names broke the 12th tie of the game with a layup for a 66-64 lead with 2:50 to play.
Speer hit a layup to tie it and then to free throws to give the Raiders a 68-66 lead with just over a minute to play.
Suman Bains tied the game for 14th time with 1:04 to play and it stayed that way into overtime.
In overtime, the Hawks again pushed the lead to three before a Speer jumper and a free throw tied it and Brookins' three free throws down the stretch were enough.
Southern Oregon set a school record with 63 free throw attempts in the game.
For the game, the two teams combined for 62 turnovers and 64 fouls.
SOU travels to Montana next weekend to face Great Falls and Montana State-Northern.
