Eastern Oregon jumped out and early and held on late as they upset ninth-ranked Southern Oregon 61-57 tonight in La Grande.
Eastern Oregon improved to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in Cascade Conference play with the victory. Southern Oregon dropped to 12-2 overall and 1-2 in conference action. Southern Oregon travels to College of Idaho Saturday night.
Shaylee Neilsen led three Mountaineers in double-digits with 15 points.
Jacki Speer (Centralia, Wash./Centralia) had another monster night for the Raiders, going for 18 points and 20 rebounds, despite fouling out late in the game.
Krystal Smith (Olympia, Wash./River Ridge) and
Emily Brookins (Central Point, Ore./Crater) both had nine points for the Raiders and Brookins added 10 rebounds.
Southern Oregon shot just 35 percent from the field for the game, 25 percent from 3-point land and 46 percent from the free throw line.
Eastern Oregon led by as much as eight in the first half and 28-24 at the half. In the second half, the advantage got up to 12 before the Raiders came back and cut the lead to three at 55-52 after buckets by Smith and Brookins with 1:19 to play, but that's as close as the Raiders would get the rest of the way.
