Second half Southern Oregon miscues led to a 22-15 come-from-behind Willamette victory today at Raider Stadium.
Willamette improved to 2-1 on the year. Southern Oregon drops to 1-2 and will host Linfield next Saturday at 6 p.m.
Southern Oregon looked to be in complete control as they used a Brandon Baldwin (Palo Cedro, Calif./Foothill) touchdown run and a Vance Beach (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) touchdown reception to take a 13-3 lead into halftime.
Willamette cut the lead to 13-9 on a two-yard run by Mikey Lemon. The Raiders then turned the point-after-attempt into their own two points as Dan Harvey (Portland, Ore./David Douglas) blocked the kick and Damilyn Tanner (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood) returned it to give the Raiders a 15-9 advantage.
But Willamette would strike again, this time on defense. Lukkes Gilgan picked up a fumble return and took it back for a score to give the Bearcats a 16-15 lead.
The Raiders then looked like they had the lead again after Baldwin broke free for a 60-yard tochdown run, but a block in the back brought the ball back to the Willamette 21. The Raiders then missed a 37-yard field goal and gave the ball back to the Bearcats.
The Bearcats turned right around and gave the Raiders the ball back with a fumble at their own 18. But three plays later, Paul Sweeney (South San Francisco, Calif./Sared Heart Cathedral)'s pass was intercepted in the end zone and another drive was stalled.
The Bearcats took advantage of this miscue and cashed in a nine-play, 55-yard drive with a 26-yard touchdown catch by Scott Schoettgen to wrap up the scoring in the fourth quarter.
Baldwin finished with 171 yards rushing on 33 carries.
Thomas Sandoval (Santa Rosa, Calif./Piner) led the SOU defensive attack with nine tackles, while Damilyn Tanner (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood), Sunni Ali (Elk Grove, Calif./Laguna Creek) and Nate Best (Redding, Calif./Central Valley) all had seven tackles.
Deon Horne led Willamette with 86 yards rushing.
