The ninth-ranked Southern Oregon men's cross country team picked up right where it left off last year by winning today's Humboldt State Invitational.
The Raiders finished with 21 points to defeated NCAA Division II Humboldt State (34). On the women's side, Humboldt took a 22-35 victory over the Raiders.
"I'm really happy with the results," SOU head coach Brent Ericksen said. "This was a really tough course, I don't we will see a harder course this year."
On the men's side, the Raiders took five of the top seven spots.
David Laney (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) won the individual title with a time of 25:23 and edged teammate
Chris Paterson (Forest Grove, Ore./Forest Grove) by nine seconds.
Ryan Sorenson (Sheridan, Wyo. /Sheridan) (25:46),
Zach Elliott (Central Point, Ore./Crater) (25:49) and
Ryan Ghelfi (Redding, Calif./Redding Adventist) (25:50) finished fifth through seventh.
"I was very impressed with how we ran in a pack," Ericksen said. "The top five were all together until the four mile mark. We still need to work on our sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth runners."
On the women's side, Ericksen was pleased how the Raiders ran in their first team race in over a year.
"The course had a lot of hills, but I think as a team the women ran really well," Ericksen said.
Seena Frantz (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) finished second in a time of 23:39, trailing only Humboldt's Megan Rolland at 23:32.
Anya Martinez (Central Point, Ore./Crater) finished fifth in 24:36, while
Kristen Juveland (Central Point, Ore./Crater) was seventh (25:06),
Tara Krempley (Sherwood, Ore./Sherwood) was 10th (25:35) and Lauri Stoutenburgh finished 10th (25:53).
The Raiders are now off until Oct. 3 when they travel to Willamette's Charles Bowles Invitational.
