BOXSCORE
Denise Powell (Grants Pass, Ore./Hidden Valley) scored her fourth goal of the season as Southern Oregon scored a 1-0 overtime victory over NCAA Division II Western Oregon today in Monmouth.
The Raiders are now 2-5-1 overall and Western Oregon dropped to 1-5-3. The Raiders open up Cascade Conference play Friday at 1 p.m. when they host Oregon Tech.
"We showed a lot of great resolve," SOU head coach Jon Clement said. "The team did a really good job of putting Friday's loss behind us. We had a sharp practice last night and for a long time today we were very good."
After going through regulation and the first overtime scoreless, the Raiders put an end to the match less than two minutes into the second overtime period.
Powell, who had two shots on goal during the match, beat Western goalie Brittney Rigtrup to a loose ball and then buried it into the empty net to give the Raiders the victory.
SOU finished the match with 12 shots and six shots on goal. SOU keeper
Jessica Kuehlwein (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) finished the game with six saves.
Clement also praised the play of
Dianne Uehara (Kailua, Hawaii/Kalaheo),
Auika Muragin (Koloa, Hawaii/Kauai),
Tori Chambliss (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge) and
Chenin Young (Upland, Calif./Upland) and the Raiders were able to get
Sara Switzer (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) back in the lineup.
"Our defending was lockdown, like collegiate defending should be," Clement said.
