Mary Hardin-Baylor took advantage of four Southern Oregon turnovers and broke open a close game in the second half on the way to a 31-10 victory today at Raider Stadium.
The Crusaders, ranked fourth in this week's NCAA Division III rankings, improved to 6-0 on the year. Southern Oregon dropped to 2-5 overall has a week off before hosting Azusa Pacific on Oct. 30.
The Crusaders broke a scoreless tie at the start of the second quarter by converting a fumble into an eight-yard touchdown run by quarterback LiDarral Bailey for a 7-0 lead.
Southern Oregon cut the lead to 7-3 with a 29-yard field goal by
Tyler Crowley (Palo Cedro, Calif./Bishop Quinn), but the Crusaders drove the field and pushed the score to 10-3 on a 46-yard field goal just before the half.
In the second half, UMHB again took advantage of a fumble on SOU's first play from scrimmage. The Crusaders marched the ball 50 yards on six plays, finishing with a 19-yard run by Bailey.
Quincy Daniels ran in from five-yards out to make the score 24-3 at the end of the third quarter.
Brandon Baldwin (Palo Cedro, Calif./Foothill) found the end zone for the Raiders in the fourth quarter, scoring from 2-yards out to cut the lead to 24-10, but after the Crusaders recovered the onside kick, Bailey found Trey Hazelton from five yards out to wrap up the scoring.
Mary Hardin-Baylor finished the game with 480 yards of offense and ran away with time of possession battle in the second half. The SOU defense was forced on the field for over 21 of the 30 minutes of the second half.
Bailey finished the game rushing for 143 yards, while Daniels rushed for 106 yards.
Vance Beach (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) was the star offensively for the Raiders, catching seven balls for 100 yards. Quarterback
Paul Sweeney (South San Francisco, Calif./Sared Heart Cathedral) finished the game 13 for 30 passing for 165 yards, despite having several balls dropped.
Brandon Baldwin (Palo Cedro, Calif./Foothill) had 58 yards on the ground for SOU.
Dayne Mendes (Hilmar, Calif./Hilmar) and
Lance Tausaga (Cave Junction, Ore./Illinois Valley) both had nine tackles for the Raiders. Mendes also had two tackles-for-loss, 1.5 sacks and one interception.
Randy Fesser (Portland, Ore./Heritage) also had an interception for the Raiders.
