The top-ranked Concordia women's soccer team scored in the 12th minute and then held on for a 1-0 victory over Southern Oregon today in Portland.
With the victory, Concordia improved to 15-0-2 on the year and 7-0-1 in conference play. Southern Oregon dropped to 11-4-2 overall and 5-2-1 in conference play. The Raiders will face Warner Pacific tomorrow afternoon in a match that will decide SOU's postseason fate.
The Raiders are currently in third place in the conference standings with 16 points. Concordia has clinched the regular season title with 22 points, while Corban is second with 18 points and OIT and College of Idaho are both tied for fourth with 15 points. The top four teams advance to the conference's postseason tournament.
Concordia got on the board in the 12th minute with a goal by Alex Thomas for a 1-0 lead that stood through the match.
The Raiders tried to break through the CU defense late in the second half, but shots by
Kennedy Roteman (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza) and
Denise Powell (Grants Pass, Ore./Hidden Valley) didn't find the net.
Southern Oregon and Concordia finished the match with nine shots a piece.
Stephanie Carr (Upland, Calif./Upland) and Alexi Mahoney both had two shots a piece for the Raiders.
"I thought we were a little scattered defensively early in the game and I think it was a combo of maybe too much respect for our opponents and a little bit of nerves," SOU head coach Jon Clement said. "We came out and controlled the tempo in the second half. The margin of victory between two good teams is usually small and if you make an error against a good team, it's going to hurt you."
