Azusa Pacific scored 21 second quarter points en route to a 28-6 halftime lead and a 38-13 victory over Southern Oregon tonight at Raider Stadium.
Azusa snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory and improved to 5-3 on the season. Southern Oregon dropped its sixth straight game and fell to 2-6 overall.
The Cougars took a 7-0 lead in the opening quarter on a Jay York 43-yard interception return for a touchdown. The Raiders answered right back with a 30-yard
Paul Sweeney (South San Francisco, Calif./Sared Heart Cathedral) to
Danny Keenan (Pacifica, Calif./Terra Nova) touchdown pass and after missing the extra point trailed 7-6.
The second quarter the Cougars put the game away.
Oliver Petty scored on a six-yard run to open up the scoring. John van den Raadt scored on an 80-yard run for a 21-6 lead and Lionel Fujioka caught a 33-yard pass from van den Raadt to make the score 28-6 with 47 second to play in the second quarter.
The Cougars added a field goal in the third quarter and a fourth quarter touchdown pass before the Raiders wrapped the scoring with a two-yard run by
Brandon Baldwin (Palo Cedro, Calif./Foothill).
Azusa, ranked sixth in the NAIA in rushing coming into the game, ran for 291 yards on the ground and finished with 462 yards of offense.
Van de Raadt finished the game with 137 yards rushing and 171 yards passing.
Keenan was the star offensively for SOU, finishing with five catches for 87 yards.
Defensively for the Raiders,
Juwuan Brown (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) had eight tackles and two tackles-for-loss and
Sam Latham (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) finished with eight tackles.
Southern Oregon wraps up the season on the road next week at Menlo and at Northwestern Oklahoma on Nov. 13.
