A last second drive fell short on downs as the Southern Oregon football team dropped a 31-26 decision at 16th-ranked Northwestern Oklahoma State.
Northwestern Oklahoma will now await word on a bid the NAIA Playoffs with an 8-2 record. Southern Oregon's season comes to an end at 3-7.
The Raiders jumped on the board early with a 47-yard pass from freshman
Chris Kammel (Medford, Ore./Phoenix) to senior
Vance Beach (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) for a 7-0 lead.
SOU pushed the lead to 9-0 when Northwestern Oklahoma mis-handled a snap in the end zone and took the safety.
The Rangers then ran off 10 straight points before half to take a 10-9 lead before intermission.
Nate Guillory broke through for a 36-yard touchdown for a 17-9 lead in the third quarter as both teams began trading touchdown.
Kammel then found
Isiah Watson (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) for a 48-yard score and a two-point conversion by
Brandon Baldwin (Palo Cedro, Calif./Foothill) tied the game at 17-17.
Guillory scored again the Rangers next possession for a 24-17 lead and back came the Raiders once again.
Kammel and Beach hooked up for the second time in the game, this time from 27 yards out and after a missed extra point, the Raiders had cut the lead to 24-23.
The Rangers added another score before the third quarter ended and a field goal by
Tyler Crowley (Palo Cedro, Calif./Bishop Quinn) helped cut the lead to 31-26 in the fourth quarter.
After a big defensive stand, the Raiders had one last chance for the victory, but after moving the ball to the Rangers' 39-yard-line, the drive stalled and they turned the ball over on downs and the hosts ran out the clock.
Kammel continued to impress in his second start of the season. The freshman passed for 332 yards on 25 of 38 passing and three touchdown.
Beach finished with 12 catches for 135 yards and two scores.
Danny Keenan (Pacifica, Calif./Terra Nova) had eight catches for 126 yards.
Guillory had 159 yards on the ground to lead the Rangers.
