Free Throws Carry Raiders Past Menlo

The Southern Oregon women made a living at the free throw line and scored a 75-65 victory over Menlo today at McNeal Pavilion.

Southern Oregon improved to 4-4 with the victory. The Raiders host William Jessup Monday night at 6 p.m. Menlo dropped to 4-4 on the year.

Alexi Smith (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) led SOU with 14 points, while Josi McDermott (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) added 10 points.

As a team, SOU shot 73 percent from the free throw line (30 of 41), while the Oaks made just 58 percent of their free throws (18 of 31).

The Oaks cut the SOU lead to 62-60 with 5:08 to play in the second half, but free throws by Krystal Smith (Olympia, Wash./River Ridge) and Nicole Mowbray (Oak Harbor, Wash./Oak Harbor) and jumpers by Nalani Barnes and Mowbray quickly gave SOU a 68-60 lead.

Smith and Mowbray scored back-to-back buckets to push the lead to 10 at 72-62 and Mowbray iced the game with a free throw with 1:40 to play for a 73-62 advantage.

Monique Ayers-Calvello led Menlo with 19 points and 18 rebounds.
