Raiders Rebound With Sweep Of Eastern

After suffering its first Cascade Conference sweep of the year Friday, the Southern Oregon women's softball team bounced back with the bats Saturday afternoon in a sweep of Eastern Oregon in La Grande.

The Raiders won the opener 11-1 and then won the nightcap 12-6. The 23 runs in the doubleheader are the most since the Raiders scored 32 in a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Oregon in 2006.

Southern Oregon improved to 11-17 overall and 7-7 in conference play. The Raiders host Northwest Christian next Friday. Eastern Oregon dropped to 9-17 overall and 1-11 in conference action.

In the opener, the Raiders had nine hits and also benefitted from six Eastern Oregon errors.

Southern Oregon led 4-1 before exploding in the top of the seventh.

A single by senior Justine Fulton (Reno, Nev./McQueen) was followed by just one more hit (a double by Kathryn Moy), but four Eastern Oregon errors that helped the Raiders put a seven-spot up in the inning.

Meghan Laughlin (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute) led the Raiders with two hits. Starting pitcher Karri Johnson (Delta, British Columbia/Sands Secondary) picked up the victory to improve to 6-2 in conference play and also scored three runs. In the circle, Johnson struck out a season-high eight and only walked two.

In the nightcap, senior Danielle Stratton (Klamath Falls, Ore./Mazama) took advantage of her first start of the year with a pair of extra base hits for the Raiders.

The first big blast came in the top of the first with a three-run home run to highlight a six-run first inning.

In the top of the second, the Raiders received another big blast - this one off the bat of junior Sarah Wharton (Ontario, Ore./Ontario).

Wharton hit a three-run bomb to straight-away centerfield to help take the Raiders take a 10-2 lead after an inning-and-a-half.

The Raiders wrapped up their scoring in the top of sixth as Stratton scored a pair with a double to right.

Freshman pitcher Jessica Flores (Corning, Calif./Corning) picked up the victory in the circle for the Raiders as she scattered nine hits over seven innings.

Stratton finished the game with two hits and five RBI. Flores, Wharton and junior Emily Matekel (Colfax, Calif./Colfax) also each had a pair of hits.
