The Southern Oregon women's soccer team opens up the 2010 season Sunday afternoon when they face Concordia-Irvine in Portland.
Sunday's match is slated to start at Noon.
The Raiders are coming off a 7-8-2 overall record and a 5-3-1 conference mark and are wrapping up two weeks of Fall camp.
"So far, so good for us," fifth-year head coach Jon Clement said. "It was really great to see everyone come into camp fit and ready to go. That has really helped create a fast tempo in training and as a result our competitiveness at practice has been stellar. Our returning players have carried over the momentum gained from this past Spring - which was easily our best ever - and our incoming class has been fantastic."
Clement has been impressed with the play of returners
Dianne Uehara (Kailua, Hawaii/Kalaheo),
Jessica Kuehlwein (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City),
Chenin Young (Upland, Calif./Upland) and
Denise Powell (Grants Pass, Ore./Hidden Valley).
Powell led SOU with seven goals last year and is coming off offseason surgery.
Newcomers
Kennedy Roteman (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza),
Ashton Griffen (Duvall, Wash./Cedarcrest) and
Alyssa Bricker (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) have also looked impressive during camp.
"I think we're a very talented and technical group," Clement said. "There have been lots of good moments of flowing, creative soccer and our ability to connect with each other should be fun to watch this year. Still, we have a challenging schedule and are definitely up against some very tough teams this year. Because of that we have to aim for consistency and deal well with the inevitable ups and downs of a long season."
Concordia-Irvine is receiving votes in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 poll and will face host and third-ranked Concordia-Portland Friday afternoon.
