Kenny Cavness' 54-yard touchdown reception with 1:22 to play proved to be the difference as Menlo scored a 20-13 come-from-behind victory over Southern Oregon today in a key NAIA matchup at Raider Stadium.
With the victory, Menlo improved to 3-1 on the season. Southern Oregon dropped to 2-2 on the year and hosts NCAA Division II Western Oregon next Saturday at Raider Stadium.
Southern Oregon jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first half, despite losing starting quarterback
Mike McDonald (Burbank, Calif./Burbank) to an injury in the first quarter.
Tyler Crowley (Palo Cedro, Calif./Bishop Quinn) put the Raiders up 3-0 on the opening drive with a 39-yard field goal. Mike Springer made it 10-0 with a 1-yard run in the second quarter for the halftime lead.
The two teams traded field goals in the third quarter as the Raiders held on to a 13-3 lead.
The fourth quarter was all Menlo.
Kevin Kurtz cut the lead to 13-6 with a 34-yard field goal. Kyle Campas hauled in an 8-yard pass to tie the game at 13-13 with 4:58 to play and Cavness put the game away with his 54-yard touchdown reception from Cruz Castillo.
Menlo finished the game with 264 yards, despite being held to 28 in the first half.

Brandon Baldwin (Palo Cedro, Calif./Foothill) rushed for 128 yards on 25 carries, including a long of 27. Junior
Paul Sweeney (South San Francisco, Calif./Sared Heart Cathedral) finished the game 6 of 20 for 77 yards in relief of McDonald.
Castillo passed for 196 yards to lead the Oaks. Payton Bell finished with 54 yards rushing. Cavness had 94 yards on five catches.
Defensively for SOU, JT Gillmore finished with 14 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
Sam Latham (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) had nine stops and
Juwuan Brown (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) finished with eight stops.
