Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – A Southern Oregon goal early in the first half proved to be enough as the Raiders defeated Northwest Christian 1-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference women's soccer action Monday afternoon.
With the win, the Raiders improve to 6-5-1 overall and 3-1 in the CCC. Northwest Christian falls to 1-10 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Southern Oregon returns to action Thursday afternoon, when the Raiders will host Trinity Lutheran in a non-conference match at 3 p.m. at University Field.
“To go on the road this week and get two tight victories against hardworking teams, I'm really proud of our team for that,” SOU head coach Jon Clement said. “It's a really good start to our conference season.”
The lone goal of the contest came in the 16th minute, when
Stephanie Carr (Upland, Calif./Upland) passed to
Denise Powell (Grants Pass, Ore./Hidden Valley) 10 yards in front of the net. Powell knocked it in for the eventual game-winner, her third goal of the season.
Southern Oregon had a couple chances to add to their lead, with the best scoring opportunity in the second half coming on
Kennedy Roteman (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza)'s shot in the 53rd minute that hit the crossbar. The Raiders outshot the Beacons 17-2 in the match, including 11-1 in the opening half.
“It was workmanlike,” Clement said. “We did just what we needed to do to win the game. We didn't have the best flow, but we were pretty solid. We didn't give away any chances.”
Jessica Kuehlwein (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) earned the shutout in goal for the Raiders, picking up one save in the win. Powell's four shot attempts led both teams, with Stacey Hamer adding three shots.
