ASHLAND, Ore. – Southern Oregon scored three goals in a 13-minute stretch during the second period to pull away to a 4-1 nonconference victory over visiting Trinity Lutheran College Thursday afternoon at University Field.
With the win, SOU improves to 7-5-1 overall. Trinity Lutheran falls to 4-8-3 this season. The Raiders return to action Sunday, when they host Oregon Tech in a Cascade Collegiate Conference match at 1 p.m.
“Our counter-defending was way better in the second half,” SOU head coach Jon Clement said of the Raiders' second-period effort in pulling away from the Eagles. “That led to better fluid possession, and our finishing was really good.”
The Raiders scored first in the match, as
Chenin Young (Upland, Calif./Upland) took a pass off a corner kick from
Danielle Stave (Petaluma, Calif./St Vincent de Paul) and knocked it into the left side of the goal from five yards out in the 22nd minute. Trinity Lutheran tied it up less than three minutes later, when Briann Oostinga drew SOU goalkeeper
Jessica Kuehlwein (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) out and bounced the ball past her for a close-range uncontested shot.
While the scoreboard showed a 1-1 tie at halftime, the SOU offense controlled the ball for the majority of the opening period. The Raiders entered the break with a 15-3 shot advantage and a 6-0 corner kick advantage.
Alexis Mahoney (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) scored the eventual game-winner for the Raiders in the 64th minute, charging up the middle past TLC goalkeeper Kaylin Wilson and taking the straight-on shot from 10 yards out. Less than eight minutes later,
Serena DeChristofaro (Martinez, Calif./Alhambra) took a long pass from
Sydney Paulsen (Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley) in front of the goal and knocked it in for a 3-1 SOU advantage.
Stephanie Carr (Upland, Calif./Upland) closed out the scoring in the 77th minute on a penalty kick for the Raiders. Southern Oregon finished the match with a 29-4 shot advantage, with Wilson saving 13 shots while yielding the four goals. Kuehlwein finished with three saves in the win.
“Overall it was a really good second half,” Clement said. “I'm really proud of our team that we're able to turn our game on a dime like that and take the game from the other team.”
