“We're thrilled to get the positive result at home, and another shutout is also nice,” SOU head coach Jon Clement said.

The Raiders controlled the ball throughout the first half, outshooting the Mountaineers 11-0 in the opening period, but Chantal Schefers came up with three saves to help EOU maintain a scoreless tie at halftime.

“I don't know that we were at our sharpest in the front part of the field, and our final idea could've used a little more creativity,” Clement said. “But still, it's difficult when the other team has so many players behind the ball.”

Southern Oregon finally broke through early in the second half, when Denise Powell (Grants Pass, Ore./Hidden Valley) dribbled away from a defender about 20 yards away from the goal and shot from the right side to put SOU up 1-0 in the 50th minute. The Raiders had chances to add to their lead and the Mountaineers had a couple shots at tying the score, but Powell's goal held up as the game-winner for SOU.

“We're really pleased about the quality of the goal,” Clement said. “It was a great piece of soccer I.Q. that came from an idea the team put forth at halftime, leading to a first-class finish by Denise.”

Schefers picked up seven saves in the match to go with the one goal allowed in 90 minutes of play. Jessica Kuehlwein (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) went the distance in goal for the Raiders to earn the shutout, saving two shots on goal in the process.

Southern Oregon will head to Washington for the final two matches of the regular season, playing at Evergreen and Northwest this week. The Raiders will play Evergreen on Saturday, with the game time set for 1 p.m.
