KIRKLAND, Wash. – With a chance to clinch a share of its first-ever Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season championship, the Southern Oregon soccer team fell 1-0 to Northwest Monday afternoon in the regular season finale for both teams.
The loss ends SOU's seven-match winning streak and drops the Raiders' record to 11-6-1 overall and 7-2 in conference play. Northwest improves to 10-3-4 overall and 5-1-2 in the CCC. With Southern Oregon finishing second and Northwest placing third in the conference standings, the Raiders will host the Eagles in a CCC Tournament first-round match Saturday at 2 p.m. at University Field.
“We fought and battled hard, and I think that's been a tenet of our team this year, so that didn't go away today,” SOU head coach Jon Clement said. “I don't think we had our sharpest I.Q. today, and it turned the style of the game against what we'd really like it to be.”
The Raiders outshot the Eagles 19-10 in the match, including 11-4 in the first half, but NU goalkeeper Jordan Holmes finished with seven saves to earn the shutout. The match was tied until late in regulation, when Abby Brauer made a penalty kick in the 81st minute that would hold up as the game-winner.
Six different Raiders finished with shots on goal, led by two for
Kennedy Roteman (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza).
Jessica Kuehlwein (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) made three saves in the loss, yielding the lone goal while playing the entire 90 minutes in goal.
“I have full confidence in our team,” Clement said. “We had a great year and deserve to be playing at home in the first round and we'll be ready for the rematch. Northwest is a great team and we know we'll have to play better to beat them.”
