LAKE WALES, Fla. – Southern Oregon took a double-digit lead into halftime and scored 52 points in the second half as the Raiders defeated Warner 88-74 Thursday night at Turner Athletic Center.
With the win, SOU improves to 3-0 to start the season. Warner falls to 0-1 after losing its season opener. The Raiders return to action tomorrow night, when they visit Northwood at 6 p.m. E.S.T.
Warner opened fast, scoring eight of the first 10 points to take a six-point lead just over three minutes into the game. A few minutes later the Raiders opened a 22-4 run to turn the early deficit into a 12-point lead at 26-14 with 6:35 to play. The Raiders took their biggest lead of the half in the final minute of the period after Chiquita Thomas hit a three-pointer to put SOU up 36-23.
Southern Oregon built its lead up to 16 points at 48-32 in the first five minute of the second half, and after Warner briefly pulled to within single-digits at 52-43, the Raiders used a 15-4 run to go ahead by 20 points with less than nine minutes to play.
The Royals used a 10-point streak to get back in the game, pulling to 76-68 with 3:12 remaining, but the four free throws from
RaTanya Newsome (Tucson, Ariz./Tucson) and
Nalani Hernandez (Tucson, Ariz./Tucson) helped the Raiders score the next nine points to put the game away.
The Raiders finished with 28 points off the bench, highlighted by
Cassandra Tiggett (Beaverton, Ore./)'s 12 points and Newsome's 12.
Krysten Copeland (Rohnert Park, Calif./Santa Rosa High School) led SOU with 14 points, while
Josi McDermott (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) tallied her second double-double in three games with 11 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
For the hosts, Shawnelle Campbell made 11-of-12 shots from the free throw line and totaled 35 points, nearly half of her team's 74 points in the game.
