CALDWELL, Idaho – Southern Oregon battled back to within three points in the final minutes after trailing by 22 in the second half, but College of Idaho scored the final four points to clinch a 63-56 Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball victory Saturday night at J.A. Albertson Activities Center.
The loss drops Southern Oregon's record to 10-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play. College of Idaho improves to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in the CCC. The Raiders will have next week off before returning to action Dec. 29 with a home game against Concordia at 5:30 p.m.
Haley Newell (Santa Monica, Calif./) led SOU with 21 points, while
Nalani Hernandez (Tucson, Ariz./Tucson) added 14 points and nine rebounds. Felicity Jones led C of I with 14 points and Dayna Drager finished with 10 points. The Yotes out-rebounded the Raiders 56-43, led by Meghan Hughes' 12 boards.
Southern Oregon made only 25.7 percent of its shots (18-of-70) in the game, while College of Idaho made 38.1 percent of its shots (24-of-63).
RaTanya Newsome (Tucson, Ariz./Tucson) hit a jumper to open the scoring for SOU in the first two minutes, but College of Idaho scored the next 12 points to take a double-digit lead.
The Raiders battled back to within one point following Newell's three-pointer with just over eight minutes to play in the first half. College of Idaho responded with a 20-4 run and held a 34-19 halftime advantage. They stretched their lead to 22 points at 47-25 with 13:27 to play.
Hernandez knocked down a three to spark a 31-12 run that pulled SOU within three points with 3:06 remaining on a Newell jumper. Hughes made a jumper at the other end to push the lead back to five, and the Raiders missed their final eight field goal attempts of the game.
