Second-Half Comeback Falls Short in 71-62 Loss to Corban

ASHLAND – A furious second-half Southern Oregon rally fell short as No. 12 Corban hung on to defeat the Raiders 71-62 in Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball action Saturday night at Bob Riehm Arena.

The loss drops Southern Oregon to 10-2 overall and 1-1- in conference play, while Corban improves to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the CCC. Southern Oregon returns to action Dec. 10, when the Raiders will travel to the Bay Area for a nonconference game against Holy Names.

Josi McDermott (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) led SOU with 14 points, while Haley Newell (Santa Monica, Calif./) finished with 12 and Angelica Cahee (Oroville, Calif./) added 11. The Raiders only connected on 30.8 percent of their shots from the field (24-of-78) in the loss.

Katie Steigleman scored a game-high 28 points and set a new Corban career record for points. Tess Bennett finished with 14 points and Tara Vanweerdhuizen posted 12 points and 10 rebounds to earn a double-double.

Southern Oregon used an 8-2 run to pull within one point after falling behind 18-11midway through the first half. Corban responded with a 14-4 run to take a 34-23 lead with less than five minutes to play in the half, and the Warriors closed the half on an 11-1 run to take a 45-29 advantage into the break.

Corban scored the first five points after halftime to stretch its lead to 19 points. The Warriors led 56-40 with 13:18 to play, but the Raiders used a 15-point streak and pulled within one point on a free throw by Cassandra Tiggett (Beaverton, Ore./) with 6:15 remaining.

A Steigleman jumper ended the SOU run, and Corban pulled ahead by seven points on Bennett's jumper with less than a minute to go. The Warriors hit all six free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
