ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon women's basketball team will travel to the Bay Area this weekend for a non-conference rematch with California Maritime Sunday at 2 p.m.
Southern Oregon, 10-2 overall this season, will face a California Maritime team that handed the Raiders their first loss of the season, 73-67 on Nov. 25.
“We're excited about this game, a chance to play them for the second time this season,” SOU head coach
Lynn Kennedy said. “Cal. Maritime has an excellent team, Dave (Covell)'s done a good job of building that program up and they've been playing really well this year.”
The Keelhaulers are 4-6 with games scheduled against Fresno Pacific and Dominican this week before Sunday's contest against SOU. They lead the NAIA in three-point shooting percentage, hitting 42 percent of their shots from beyond the arc.
Alexsis Brown has hit 54.5 percent of her three-point attempts – the top mark in the nation – while scoring a team-high 22.3 points per game, the third-highest average in the NAIA. Brown is also averaging 7.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.4 steals per contest, all team-high totals. Sabrina Domingo adds 11.5 points per game for CMA.
“Alexsis Brown is one of the best players in the nation,” Kennedy said. “It should be a good challenge for us again this weekend.”
The Raiders have faced the Keelhaulers seven times, with the Raiders winning the first six matchups before the loss last month. Southern Oregon has outscored its opponents by 114 points, 872-758.
Josi McDermott (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) leads the team in scoring with an average of 12.5 points per game, and
Haley Newell (Santa Monica, Calif./) is averaging 10.3.
Five Raiders are averaging between five and nine points per game. The Raiders are out-rebounding opponents by 7.2 boards per contest, led by
Nalani Hernandez (Tucson, Ariz./Tucson)'s 7.5 average.
Krysten Copeland (Rohnert Park, Calif./Santa Rosa High School) is averaging 6.2 rebounds per game, followed by
Kiara Moore (Phoenix, Ariz./Tolleson Union) (6.1),
Cassandra Tiggett (Beaverton, Ore./) (5.0) and McDermott (4.7).
