KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest opened the second half with a 12-3 run as the Eagles defeated Southern Oregon 81-71 in Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball action Saturday night.
Southern Oregon falls to 12-8 overall and 3-6 in conference play with the loss, while Northwest improves to 8-9 overall and 4-5 in the CCC. The Raiders return to action Jan. 20, when the Raiders will host College of Idaho at 5:30 p.m. at Bob Riehm Arena.
Haley Newell (Santa Monica, Calif./) led SOU with 19 points, with
Angelica Cahee (Oroville, Calif./) and
Josi McDermott (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) each totaling 11 for the Raiders.
Kiara Moore (Phoenix, Ariz./Tolleson Union) grabbed 10 rebounds in the loss.
Jessalyn Jackson scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead both teams. Emily Drivstuen scored 20 points, and Domi Mendezona added 14 points for the Eagles. Carol Howard finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.
The first half saw five tie scores before Northwest used an 11-1 run to take a 38-28 lead following Mari Gonzalez's jumper with 2:46 remaining.
RaTanya Newsome (Tucson, Ariz./Tucson) ended the NU run with a jumper, and Cahee scored the final four points of the half on a pair of free throws and a layup to make it 40-34 at the break.
Howard scored the first points of the second half with a three-pointer for the Eagles, and Northwest used a 12-3 run to push its lead to 15 points at 52-37.
Krysten Copeland (Rohnert Park, Calif./Santa Rosa High School) ended the run with a pair of free throws, and Newell made a three-pointer and followed it up with a layup to give SOU seven consecutive points. The Raider run continued as SOU pulled within six points on a pair of
Nalani Hernandez (Tucson, Ariz./Tucson) free throws.
Northwest responded with nine straight points to push the lead back to 15 points with just under 10 minutes to play. Another Howard three-pointer gave NU its largest lead of the game at 68-51, and the Eagles coasted to the 81-71 victory.
The Raiders could not find their shooting touch, as SOU shot 27.9 percent (24-of-86) from the field. Northwest shot 43.3 percent (29-of-67) in the game. Southern Oregon finished with 60 rebounds, 12 more than the Eagles, including 30 offensive boards.
