Box Score KLAMATH FALLS – The Southern Oregon volleyball team finished off a season sweep of arch-rival Oregon Tech for the seventh consecutive season, knocking off the Owls 3-1 (25-11, 24-26, 25-22, 25-23) Wednesday night at Danny Miles Court.
Southern Oregon improves to 14-8 overall and 10-2 in conference play with its 20th straight win against Tech, which falls to 10-15 overall and 2-10 in the CCC. The Raiders will have this weekend off and return to action Oct. 19, when they will travel to Salem for a 7 p.m. match against Corban.
Haley Kasler (Grants Pass, Ore./Hidden Valley) led SOU with 12 kills, while
Mona Goudarzian (Albany, Ore./West Albany) added 10 in the win.
Renee Yomtob (Boise, Idaho/Centennial) tallied 27 digs to lead the Raiders, and
Caryn Westrick (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake) posted a double-double with 24 assists and 10 digs. Kristen Walters finished with 12 kills for Oregon Tech, while Marie Bauman tallied a match-high 30 digs and Kayleigh Whelchel added 27 assists.
The Raiders used a couple long streaks to pull away to an easy win in the opening set. After Oregon Tech scored the first point of the match, SOU quickly used a 5-1 run to take a three-point lead. Oregon Tech used a 4-2 run to pull within two, but an OIT service error sparked a seven-point streak for the Raiders to give the visitors a 14-6 advantage. A few points later the Raiders opened a six-point run to all but put the set away at 20-8, and a kill by
Sam Boehnke (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) handed SOU the 25-11 set win.
Oregon Tech bounced back in the second set after a slow start, as the Owls used a seven-point streak to turn an early 7-3 deficit into a 10-7 advantage. The Owls would go on to lead by as many as five points in the set, but the Raiders came on late to look like they might claim a comeback victory. With OIT nursing a 22-17 lead,
Jordan Crossley (Napa, Calif./Napa) picked up a kill to begin a 6-1 SOU run that tied it up at 23-apiece. Jen Saltenberger's kill gave OIT the set-point advantage, and after SOU tied it up again at 24-24 the Owls scored the final two points to tie the match at one set apiece.
The third set remained close the whole way, with neither team leading by more than three until the very end. Ten tie scores highlighted the game, with the final coming at 19-19 when SOU used a five-point streak to build a brief four-point lead of 23-19. Oregon Tech promptly responded with back-to-back points to pull within two, but an OIT ball handling error gave SOU the set-point advantage. One point later, a

The fourth set continued the trend of the previous game, as the teams exchanged small streaks to remain close throughout. Southern Oregon used a four-point streak to take a 17-12 lead, but Oregon Tech eventually battled back to tie it up at 23-23 following a 5-1 run. Goudarzian's 10th kill of the night gave the Raiders the match point advantage, and an OIT attack error finished off the 3-1 SOU match victory.
