ASHLAND – The 2012 regular season concludes this weekend for the Southern Oregon soccer team, as the Raiders head back on the road to face College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon looking to clinch a berth in the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament.
Southern Oregon, 8-5-2 overall and 4-2-1 in conference play, is currently tied with two other teams for fourth-place in the CCC standings. Concordia leads the way with 18 points, with Northwest in second (16) and Northwest Christian in third (15), followed by SOU, Corban and Oregon Tech with 13 points apiece. College of Idaho looms one point back of the pack with 12, keeping the Coyotes in the mix for a postseason spot.
The top four teams advance to the CCC Tournament, with the top two seeds hosting the semi-final matches. With two matches to go in the regular season for five of the seven teams competing for one of the four spots (Corban and Northwest Christian each only have one remaining contest), nothing has been decided to this point. For the Raiders, the focus is on the task at hand – finishing strong in Caldwell and La Grande.
“We're just looking forward to going on the road for the final time in the regular season,” SOU head coach Jon Clement said. “We're playing a very difficult College of Idaho team. They've got some dangerous players that could hurt anybody, and they've had some good results this year. We know Eastern Oregon is going to be all ramped up for their Senior Day and they're a difficult opponent, too.”
The Raiders enter the weekend having won their past two matches by a combined score of 6-1 over Northwest Christian and Oregon Tech. Southern Oregon has out-scored its opponents 31-20 this season and has more than doubled its opponents' shot totals, 239-111. Raider career goal leader
Stephanie Carr (Upland, Calif./Upland) has tallied a career-best 12 this season, while
Sydney Paulsen (Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley),
Julie Zamzow (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) and
Stacy Hamer (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) each have four scores.
Friday's match is slated for a 1 p.m. (MST) start, with College of Idaho looking to climb into one of the top four spots in the standings. The Coyotes own a 5-6-1 overall record, 4-3 in conference play, but they've picked up five wins in their last eight matches and outscored their opponents 20-9 during that stretch.
Brittney Lacey, Jessica Ayala and Sarah Hicks lead a balanced offensive attack for the Yotes, with each player tying for the team lead with four goals apiece. Melissa Holmes-Joseph has played more than 1,000 minutes in the net for C of I, tallying 57 saves and a 1.53 goal against average. The Raiders are 7-9 all-time against College of Idaho, but they snapped a six-match losing streak against the Yotes two years ago and have won the past two meetings.
Sunday's regular season finale will begin at 1 p.m. in La Grande. Eastern Oregon has struggled this season, tallying a 1-13 overall record and 1-6 conference mark entering the final weekend. The Mountaineers have been out-scored 40-8 this season, and Courtney Randall's three goals lead the team. Southern Oregon is 10-3 all-time against EOU, including wins in each of the last five matchups.
“We have our work cut out for us, but we've had a great week of training,” Clement said. “We're geared up and ready to go.”
