10/4/2012 5:20:00 PM

ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon women's soccer team travels to Portland this weekend for a pair of Cascade Collegiate Conference matches, visiting Warner Pacific at 1 p.m. on Friday and taking on top-ranked Concordia at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Southern Oregon, 5-3-2 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play, opened the 2012 conference schedule last weekend with a 1-0 home win over Evergreen before tying Northwest 0-0.

“It was a really good defending effort in both games,” SOU head coach Jon Clement said. “We probably could do a better job of finishing chances, but I know those will come.”

The Raiders have outscored opponents 22-14 this season, led by eight goals from Stephanie Carr (Upland, Calif./Upland). The senior forward now has 31 in her career and is one away from tying the SOU program record held by former Raider Katie Emerson. Sydney Paulsen (Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley) has added four goals for the Raiders, and Stacy Hamer (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) has scored three. Kelsey Clement (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor) has logged more than 600 minutes in the net for SOU, giving up nine goals in that stretch.

“We're looking forward to going on the road this weekend against Warner Pacific and Concordia,” Clement said. “Both are going to be very difficult, hardworking teams to play against, so we're excited for the challenge. I know our team is ready to go.”

Warner Pacific enters Friday's match with a 1-6 overall record, 0-1 in conference play. The Knights have struggled to find the net this season, scoring only five total goals and being shut out five times in seven matches. They picked up their first win of the season in a 4-2 home victory over Trinity Lutheran on Sept. 15 and dropped their conference season opener 4-0 to Concordia last weekend. The Knights have allowed 31 goals and have been outshot 148-29 this season.

Southern Oregon has had success against Warner Pacific over the years, building a 9-3-2 all-time record against the Knights. The Raiders have won the last three matchups by a combined score of 8-0, including a 4-0 home win last season.

Concordia has faced an impressive slate of opponents this season in building a 7-0-2 record to this point. The top-ranked Cavaliers have defeated three ranked teams and tied two others, and they opened conference play with a 4-0 win over Warner Pacific last weekend. They have outscored opponents 18-4 on the season and hold a shot advantage of 163-45.

Alex Blalock leads the team with five goals, while Alicia Alarcon-Evans has added three scores and three assists. Goalkeeper Tori Talbutt has played more than 700 minutes in the net for CU, giving up only three goals for a goal against average of 0.38.

The Cavaliers have been the top team in the Cascade Conference for more than a decade, and they own a 17-1 all-time record against Southern Oregon. The Raiders' lone win against Concordia came in 2001, when they upset CU 1-0 in Ashland. Last season the Raiders ended a streak of six consecutive shutouts against CU when they fell 2-1 in Ashland to a fourth-ranked CU squad that advanced to the NAIA National Championship Match.
