Box Score PORTLAND – A pair of goals in the final minute of regulation forced overtime and
Stephanie Carr (Upland, Calif./Upland) scored the game-winner as Southern Oregon pulled out a wild 3-2 victory over Warner Pacific in Cascade Collegiate Conference women's soccer action Friday afternoon at David Douglas High School.
Southern Oregon improves to 6-3-2 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play, while Warner Pacific falls to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in the CCC. The Raiders return to action Sunday, when they will visit No. 1 Concordia for a 2 p.m. conference match.
“Today was a very resilient effort that demanded a good bit of flexibility,” SOU head coach Jon Clement said. “It was hard to find space on their small surface and the swirling wind made conditions tricky, but we're very proud of our team for persevering and truly finding a way to win.”
Carr tied the SOU program record with her 32 goal, and her ninth of the season clinched the win for the Raiders. The senior played only 23 minutes in the match after battling a hamstring injury, but that did not stop her from coming through for the win.
Warner Pacific got on the board first, as Christina Mah took a pass from Trisha Durham and finished off the shot in the ninth minute to give the hosts the early 1-0 lead. That advantage would carry into halftime, as WPC limited Southern Oregon to only three shots in the opening period.
The Raider offense created more chances in the second half, tallying eight shots in the period.
Megan McArthur (San Jose, Calif./Presentation) came through with her first career goal for SOU, finishing off the unassisted score off a scramble in the box following a corner kick in the 64th minute.
The match looked to be destined for overtime until the final minute, when
Sydney Paulsen (Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley) passed to
Julie Zamzow (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly), who used a one-on-one advantage to give SOU a 2-1 lead with only 24 seconds remaining in regulation. Warner Pacific beat the buzzer to tie it, however, when Ranie Gramm took a long shot that found its way through the SOU defense a mere six seconds before time expired.
Carr's goal came in the 99th minute, knocking it in off a corner kick to earn the Golden Goal victory for Southern Oregon.
“Our collective team defending continues to be pretty good and I think all three lines are doing a great job of closing down and recovering,” Clement said. “Now we're looking forward to regrouping and preparing to take on a very talented Concordia team on Sunday.”
