ASHLAND – Three straight games await the Southern Oregon women's basketball team this weekend, as the Raiders travel to Klamath Falls for the Oregon Tech Tournament on Friday and Saturday before returning home to host Hope International on Sunday at 4 p.m.
Southern Oregon improved to 3-0 this season with a 97-25 victory over Pacific Union on Monday, and the Raiders look to build on that undefeated record this weekend before hosting the annual Flagship Inn Classic during Thanksgiving weekend.
The Raiders will face California Maritime on Friday at 1 p.m. in Klamath Falls in a rematch of the Raiders' season opener before taking on William Jessup on Saturday at 1 p.m. California Maritime is 0-3 this season after dropping three games at the Red Lion/SOU Season Opening Classic two weeks ago in Ashland. The Keelhaulers have played a pair of exhibitions since then, but Friday's game will be their first official contest since Nov. 4.
“We know they're going to come in ready and prepared for us,” SOU head coach
Lynn Kennedy said of California Maritime. “They always pose a real tough challenge for us. They've got some really good guards that can shoot the ball, so it's going to be tough to defend. Hopefully we bring some intensity and some pressure on their shooters.”
Southern Oregon pulled away to a dominant 101-53 win over the Keelhaulers on Nov. 2 to begin the season, and SOU has averaged 95 points per game in three contests this year. The Raiders have connected on 52.7 percent of their shots (106-of-201), including 37.0 percent from beyond the three-point arc (20-of-54), and they've out-rebounded their opponents 158-103.
Melissa Sweat (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) leads the team in scoring, averaging 19.3 points per game, while adding 4.7 rebounds per contest and a team-high 3.7 steals per game.
Angelica Cahee (Oroville, Calif./) has tallied 11.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game, and
Carly Meister (Elma, Wash./Elma) leads the team with an average of 6.3 rebounds per game.
William Jessup comes into the weekend with a 2-2 record, including back-to-back wins over Oregon Tech and Northwest Christian last weekend. The Warriors are averaging 64.8 points per game, led by Ashley Rose with 15.4 and Taylor Borba with 15.0 per contest. Southern Oregon is 7-1 all-time against William Jessup, including a 68-65 win against the Warriors last season.
“They're coming off two really good wins for their program,” Kennedy said of William Jessup. “We know they're always a hard-fighting, tough team that crashes the glass really tough. They also have guards that can shoot it, so it's probably the most balanced team they've had the past couple of years.”
Following those two games, the Raiders will return home for their third game in as many days on Sunday, hosting Hope International. The Royals are 4-0 this season, with wins over upcoming SOU opponents Simpson and William Jessup. They have averaged 80.5 points per game while limiting opponents to an average of 65.5 points. Brittany Bauman leads the team in scoring, averaging 25.25 points while shooting 53.5 percent from the field. Andrina Rendon has averaged 19.25 points and 8.5 rebounds and Krystal Canning has added 11.25 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
“They're really a quality team, and they've beaten some teams that we'll see this year,” Kennedy said. “So they'll be a tough opponent for us on our home court and will give us another chance to step up to another level and get ready for our conference season.”
