ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon women's basketball team looks to continue its unbeaten streak to open the season this weekend when the Raiders host the annual Flagship Inn Classic at Bob Riehm Arena.
Southern Oregon, 6-0 this season, hosts Lewis-Clark State on Friday at 3:30 p.m. before taking on Puget Sound on Sunday at 2 p.m. Oregon Tech and Simpson will also come to Ashland for the tournament, with games at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, 1:30 and 3:30 on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
The Raiders have outscored their opponents 585-341 this season for an average score of 97.5-56.8. Southern Oregon has made 53.5 percent of its shots (220-of-411) while limiting opponents to 28 percent shooting (113-of-403). The Raiders are averaging 52.8 rebounds and 23.5 assists per game.
Melissa Sweat (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) has led SOU in scoring in four of six games, averaging 18.5 points per game while playing only 19.8 minutes per contest. She has connected on two-thirds of her shot attempts and added four rebounds and 2.3 assists per game to go with 13 total steals and a team-best six total blocks. Through three weeks this season, she has twice received Cascade Collegiate Conference Player of the Week honors.
Alexi Smith (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) has averaged 13.7 points per game to go with 6.2 rebounds, while
Angelica Cahee (Oroville, Calif./) has averaged 11.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.
Allison Gida (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) is tallying 11.2 points per game, and
Carly Meister (Elma, Wash./Elma) is adding 10.2 points per contest, while 10 different players are averaging double-digit minutes per game.
Friday's game will be against an 0-6 Lewis-Clark State team, as the Warriors have been outscored by an average of 15 points per game. Ornela Bacchini leads the team with an average of 9.2 points per game, followed closely by Annie Kane (8.8) and Shelby Barnes (8.2). Southern Oregon lost its only previous matchup against Lewis-Clark State, falling 92-59 to the Warriors on the road during the 1995-96 season.
On Sunday the Raiders will face a 2-1 Puget Sound team that is led by Ashland native Kelsey McKinnis. McKinnis averages 22 points per game, with Sarah Stewart adding 11.7 and Katy Ainslie tallying 11.0 points per game. The Loggers' two wins have come against CCC teams, as they defeated Evergreen 72-65 on Nov. 17 and knocked off Northwest 74-57 on Nov. 20. The Raiders are 8-4 all-time against Puget Sound, including wins in six of the last seven matchups. The last time the teams faced each other, the Raiders came away with an 87-75 home victory during the 2001-02 season.
