Box Score PORTLAND – Sixth-ranked Concordia scored in the third minute and that one goal held up as the second-seeded Cavaliers defeated third-seeded Southern Oregon 1-0 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament Semifinal match Saturday at Tuominen Yard.
Southern Oregon concludes its 2012 season with a 9-6-3 overall record after advancing to the conference tournament semifinals for the third consecutive year. Concordia advances to the tournament final against regular season conference champion Northwest next Saturday in Kirkland, Wash.
“First, we'd like to congratulate Concordia and wish them luck in the final,” SOU head coach Jon Clement said after the match. “Their pressure tonight made us play a bit faster than we wanted, so you have to credit them there.”
Southern Oregon played Concordia as evenly as most teams could ever hope to, as the Raiders matched the Cavaliers' shot output in the first half and Concordia built a 9-4 shot advantage for the match. The corner kicks were an even split of 3-3, as were the saves (1-1) and fouls (Concordia had one more at 12-11).
“I couldn't be prouder of our team,” Clement said. “We put in a Herculean effort and battled hard right to the end. We just couldn't find the final pass consistently, but I still think it could have gone either way.”
The difference came less than 200 seconds into the match, when Hannah Scott found Alex Blalock near the post, where Blalock found the net from 14 yards out for what would prove to be the only goal of the night.
The typically-aggressive Raider offense was only able to get four shots off against the stout Concordia defense, but the SOU defense solidly held its own against a vaunted CU offense, limiting the Cavs to only nine shots and only two on goal.
Southern Oregon's final match means the conclusion of the SOU careers for seniors
Krista Bormann (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill),
Stephanie Carr (Upland, Calif./Upland),
Stacy Hamer (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) and
Lauren Maserjian (Placentia, Calif./Valencia). The quartet has been SOU's most successful class, with 39 wins since 2009 and two of the program's three double-digit win seasons.
“Steph, Krista, Lauren and Stacy are some of the best leaders around,” Clement said of his senior class. “It was inspirational to see them perform so well this evening.”
