Box Score PORTLAND – Warner Pacific's duo of Chelsey Christensen and Tori Carroll combined for 55 points to help the Knights hold off Southern Oregon 83-77 in Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball action Saturday night at Bob Valentine Court.
Southern Oregon falls to 13-4 overall and 3-3 overall, while Warner Pacific improves to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the CCC. The Raiders return to action Jan. 5, when they will travel to Klamath Falls for a 5:30 p.m. matchup against Oregon Tech.
Melissa Sweat (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) totaled 23 points and 10 rebounds, while
Alexi Smith (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) also posted a double-double with 18 points and 17 rebounds. The Raiders' shooting struggled throughout the game, as SOU connected on 39.2 percent of its shots (31-of-79) overall and only two of 24 shot attempts from beyond the three-point line. Christensen scored a game-high 28 points to go with eight rebounds, while Carroll finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds.
Southern Oregon took its largest lead of the game early, when a layup by
Allison Gida (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) put SOU up 8-3 just over two minutes into the game. A three-pointer by KayLee Engen and a pair of free throws by Carroll tied the game up at eight apiece, and neither team led by more than five points until a three-pointer by Christensen gave WPC 35-28 advantage with 8:12 to play in the first half.
Another basket by Christensen stretched the Knights' lead to nine points a minute later, but the Raiders scored eight straight points to pull within one following a layup by Smith. Warner Pacific scored the final four points of the half to take a 48-43 lead into the break despite a 24-4 SOU advantage on points in the paint.
The Raiders opened the second half on an 8-0 run to take a three-point lead, but the Knights reclaimed the lead on a jumper by Carroll with 16:12 to play. Morgan Wolff hit a three-pointer on Warner Pacific's next possession, and the Knights led the rest of the way to pick up the win.
