Box Score ATHERTON, Calif. – A pair of first-half goals put No. 8 Westmont ahead, and the eighth-ranked Warriors defeated Southern Oregon 4-1 Friday at the Menlo Invitational.

Southern Oregon falls to 4-2-1 with the loss, its second straight to a ranked opponent, and Westmont improves to 3-1-1. The Raiders return to action Sunday, when they will face tournament host Menlo at 2:30 p.m.

“All credit to Westmont,” SOU head coach Jon Clement said. “They were a super team today and certainly the best team that we've seen so far this year.”

Aolani Rueff put the Warriors on the board in the 21st minute with a goal, and then she assisted Ashley Correa on Westmont's second goal in the 37th minute. The Warriors outshot SOU 7-0 in the opening half and took a 2-0 lead into the break.

The Raiders pulled within one in the 63rd minute, when Chloe Welch (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande) hit Elise De Jesse (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza) for a score to make it 2-1. But that would be the Raiders' lone goal of the day, and Westmont added two more in the final 10 minutes to pull away to the win.

“We had stretches where we had our front foot on the gas,” Clement said. “I thought some of our interplay was very good. I think we made some crucial mistakes at difficult times, and to Westmont's credit they capitalized on those. I look forward to bouncing back from this and playing well on Sunday.”
