WILLAMETTE RESULTS
SALEM, Ore. / PALO ALTO, Calif. – The top-ranked men's and 12th-ranked women's Southern Oregon cross country programs competed in two of the nation's largest cross country meets Saturday, with the men's teams placing ninth at the Stanford Invite and Willamette's Charles Bowles Invitational and the women' placing 28th at Stanford.
Competing against top programs from the NCAA Division I and II levels down at Stanford,
Eric Avila (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista) led the way for the Raiders with a 25th-place finish. Avila finished the 8k run in 25:03, with
Brett Hornig (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley) finishing 59th (25:37),
Tyler VanDyke (Eagle Point, Ore./Eagle Point) placing 75th (25:46) and
Jared Hixon (Palmdale, Calif./Palmdale) finishing 77th (25:54).
The Raiders' 283 points made them the top-finishing NAIA program, with host Stanford taking first (24 points) and NCAA Division II power Adams State taking second (40) out of the 29 total teams. Up in Salem, the Raiders' second group finished ninth out of 22 teams, ahead of every Cascade Collegiate Conference besides Concordia (second) and Eastern Oregon (fifth).
Cody Carter (The Dalles, Ore./The Dalles Wahtonka) led the Salem group, finishing the 8k race in 26:08, just ahead of teammates
Timothy Gonzales (Canyon Country, Calif./Canyon), who finished 55th in 26:10, and
Zach Boyd-Helm (West Linn, Ore./West Linn), who finished 65th in 26:16. British Columbia and Concordia tied for the meet title with 91 points apiece, with Eastern Oregon finishing fifth (146 points), and other CCC teams Oregon Tech (10th, 271), Northwest Christian (11th, 278), Warner Pacific (18th, 475), Corban (19th, 513) and Northwest (21st, 590) finishing behind the Raiders.
The SOU women placed 28th overall against the top competition at Stanford, led by
Jessie Rozario (Rocklin, Calif./Del Oro) in 156th place and a time of 23:18 for the 6k course.
Anne Hagy (Medford, Ore./Phoenix ) finished close behind, posting a time of 23:31 as the Raiders finished behind only The Master's College (24th, 591 points) among NAIA schools.
Southern Oregon returns to action in two weeks, when the Raiders will travel to Lents Park in Portland for the 2012 CCC Preview Meet.
