Box Score LA GRANDE – Sixth-ranked Eastern Oregon scored nine of the first 11 points and led by as many as 27 points as the Mountaineer women defeated Southern Oregon 89-71 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action Saturday night at Quinn Coliseum.
Eastern Oregon improves to 21-2 overall and 11-0 in conference play, while Southern Oregon falls to 15-7 overall and 5-6 in the CCC. The Raiders return home next weekend, hosting Warner Pacific on Friday and Concordia on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
Both teams shot a near identical percentage in the game, with Southern Oregon shooting 46.3 percent and Eastern Oregon making 46.2 percent. The Mountaineers finished with 24 more shot attempts in the game, however, finishing with 78 attempts to SOU's 54. The Mountaineers also forced 25 turnovers while only turning the ball over 10 times to counter SOU's 41-36 rebounding advantage.
Nicole Redd and Kelsea Hurliman tied for the game-high point total with 18 apiece, while Korrie Bourn finished with 17 points and Jorie Freeman added 13.
Alexi Smith (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) led SOU with 17 points, while
Melissa Sweat (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) and
Allison Gida (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) each tallied 12 and
Krysten Copeland (Rohnert Park, Calif./Santa Rosa High School) finished with 11.
The Raiders hung as close as one point back when a
Carly Meister (Elma, Wash./Elma) jumper made it 14-13 less than eight minutes into the game, but Bourn made a jumper at the other end to spark a 19-6 run to put the Mountaineers up by 14 points. Southern Oregon pushed the deficit back down into single-figures at 38-29 going into the halftime break. Eastern Oregon scored the first six points of the second half to reclaim a double-digit advantage and pulled away to the 18-point victory.
