SOU brings five-match unbeaten streak to Eastern, C of I

ASHLAND — The Southern Oregon University women's soccer team stayed true to form in its first week of Cascade Conference play, which is to say that it's still hard to say what form it will take from day to day.

That hasn't necessarily been a bad thing for the Raiders (5-2-3 overall, 1-0-1 CCC), who will pack up a five-match unbeaten streak for a trip that takes them Thursday to Eastern Oregon (5-1-1, 1-1-0) and Saturday to College of Idaho (3-6-0, 1-1-0).

All it took were five favorably chaotic minutes to transform the first week from miserable to exhilaratingly satisfactory. The same team that couldn't score in 110 minutes during Thursday's draw against Northwest Christian did it three times in less than five minutes in a 5-3 comeback win against Corban.

That kind of unpredictability has applied not only to when the Raiders are going to get their production, but from whom. Five different Raiders scored in the win — including four who hadn't scored previously, giving them 12 goal-scoring players on the season to lead the CCC.

"Watching the forward line at practices, it's a skilled group and it's nice to have so many people who can make something happen," SOU interim head coach Jenni Rosenberg said. "We still need to improve our organization on the field but we're giving ourselves a lot of opportunities."

That was the case even when the Raiders were shut out against a defensive-minded Northwest Christian, out-shooting the Beacons 24-4. But they have been blanked four times.

SOU's defense had a four-match shutout streak working before Corban came to town. It'll face two big tests in the Mountaineers in Coyotes, whose losses last week were perfectly excusable against fourth-ranked Concordia, the CCC's 13-time defending champ.

The Mountaineers, led by Tori Fedora's three goals and three assists and Erika Whitehurst's three goals and two assists, were undefeated before seeing Concordia. The Raiders haven't lost to Eastern since 2006, leading the all-time series 10-3-1, and the teams tied 1-all last year at University Field.

The Raiders have also been successful lately against College of Idaho, taking the last three meetings by shutout to get to 8-9 in the all-time series. The Coyotes defeated Warner Pacific 3-2 last week and suffered a 5-1 setback against Concordia, the former performance being a relative explosion considering they have 10 goals in nine games. Jamiece Yizar, Devhan Morgan and Camas Curran have two apiece.

SOU's focus will remain on itself, though, according to Rosenberg.

"I think we could be on the verge of some really good soccer," she said. "We just want to play with some consistency all over the field."

The Raiders come into the week second in the CCC in shots per game (18.6), goals (2.1) and goals allowed (0.8). Sydney Paulsen (Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley)'s five goals and one assist have her out in front with 11 points while Alyssa Bricker (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) has seven and five others have four apiece: Kendra Madaras-Kelly (Boise, Idaho/Mountain View), Lisa Elledge (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista), Serena DeChristofaro (Martinez, Calif./Alhambra) and Paige Kilpatrick (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley).
