SEASIDE, Calif. – Sydney Paulsen (Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley)'s goal with less than seven minutes to spare helped the Southern Oregon University soccer team walk away with a 1-all tie Wednesday afternoon against Cal-State Monterey Bay.
Paulsen, the Cascade Conference's reigning offensive player of the week, gathered Jacquie Galvez (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley)'s pass and fired it into the top left corner of the goal to square the match up in the 84th minute.
Two hard-fought overtime periods kept it that way for the Raiders (1-0-1 overall) against the NCAA Division II Otters, for whom the contest was an exhibition.
"At the outset we had to absorb a ton of pressure," Raiders coach Jon Clement said. "Credit Monterey for really putting us on our heels because it took us the better part of 25 minutes to catch up to the speed of the game."
CSUMB's Kristen Womack took Hannah Cobb's cross and turned it into an easy goal in the 25th minute. The Otters put five shots on goal and the Raiders two.
It took Paulsen two outings to match her goal total from all of last season. The senior forward converted a hat trick in SOU's season-opening win against Holy Names.
"She hit another cracker of a shot to tie it," Clement said. "We started to polish our play at midfield a bit and created some good chances."
The Raiders will finish their trip a 6 p.m. Thursday with an exhibition at Chico State.
