SOU to face Trinity Lutheran, Carroll in Portland

ASHLAND – After begrudgingly chalking up its first two matches against ranked opponents as productive losses, the Southern Oregon University women's soccer team gets to move on.

Learning without having to learn the hard way is the objective with two weeks left before the Raiders (2-2-1 overall) open their Cascade Conference schedule. Their next opportunities are at 3:30 p.m. Friday against Trinity Lutheran (2-8-1) and at 1 p.m. Sunday against Carroll College (3-1-0).

Both are neutral-site matches to be played at Concordia University in Portland. Live stats and video will be available at the SOU Athletics Portal.

The Raiders saw their program-best regular season unbeaten streak of seven matches (dating back to last year) end last Thursday at 21st-ranked The Master's College. Freshman Caylin Jackson (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) became the ninth different Raider to score this season, converting Sydney Paulsen (Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley)'s pass for an equalizer with three minutes left in regulation, but SOU went on to lose 2-1 in the first overtime period.

Saturday's 2-0 loss at No. 9 Westmont was less productive. The Raiders fired just one shot.

They figure to get more chances against Trinity Lutheran, which has lost four straight and is already 0-5 against the Cascade Conference while being outscored 14-2. The Raiders have defeated the Eagles in each of the last two seasons, 4-1 and 3-0.

SOU has had less success against Carroll, which received votes in this week's Top 25 poll. The Saints are 3-0 all-time against the Raiders but the teams haven't met since 2010.

The Saints have also been busy against the CCC, defeating College of Idaho and Northwest Christian and taking their only loss against Northwest University. Goalkeeper Jamie Carter is among their three freshman starters and was named the Frontier Conference Defensive Player of the Week after yielding three goals in her first four matches.

The Raiders return home for their last tune-up on Sept. 28 in a nonleague tilt against Oregon Tech. Their CCC openers will also be at University Field, Oct. 3 against Northwest Christian and Oct. 5 against Corban.

Despite being shut out in her last three matches, Paulsen is still tied for the conference lead in goals scored with four, while SOU is second in goals per game (2.40) and third in goals against (0.94).
