Gasman, Raiders beat up on Evergreen

ASHLAND – The 11th-ranked Southern Oregon University volleyball team's eighth straight win, a Friday night sweep of the Evergreen Geoducks at Riehm Arena, looked a lot like the previous seven.

The 25-21, 25-17, 25-20 romp also had a lot in common with the previous 22 matchups against Evergreen, most glaringly the fact that the Raiders got it done in a hurry. The Geoducks (13-15 overall, 3-11 Cascade Conference) did nearly steal their first set from SOU (18-3, 12-1) since 2005, leading the second set 15-8 and then 17-14, but the Raiders finished it off with 11 straight points.

Sophomore middle Emma Gasman (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan) took advantage of Evergreen's undersized front line with her most efficient night of the season: 13 kills on 19 swings and a .526 attacking average. Motade Atanda (San Jose, Calif./Presentation) converted 15 kills with five digs, Paulla Pinheiro (Fortaleza, Brazil/Colegio Farias Brito) had 13 and four, and Lauren McGowne (Coos Bay, Ore./Marshfield) distributed 39 assists.

The Raiders will ride their streak into Saturday's 5 p.m. match against Northwest, which was a five-set winner Friday at Oregon Tech.

"It was kind of a slow match to start for both teams, but I thought we did a good job of rallying ourselves," SOU coach Josh Rohlfing said. "We know that every match is important right now, and we prepared and played well enough to win."

Rohlfing praised the efforts of libero Brookelynn Cole (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic), who had 19 digs to bring Evergreen's attacking average down to .117. SOU posted a .278 clip.

"Brookelynn was all over the place," he said. "A lot of times our blocking leads to good floor defense, but tonight it was the other way around."

Abbie Hanser (Billings, Mont./Billings Central Catholic), SOU's most consistent defensive force in the middle, assisted five blocks and had one solo.

The Geoducks were led by Ivy Eakes' nine kills, but she needed 29 swings to get them.

The Raiders' sideout percentage was 77 in the first frame as they jumped out to a 16-7 lead. Tyana Andrews (Rochester, Wash./Centralia) was responsible for serving them back in the second set, but four different Raiders had kills on consecutive points during the winning rally.
