17th-ranked Raiders open with 98-86 win over New Hope

ASHLAND – Sixteen unanswered first-half points were enough for the final score to excuse Southern Oregon's opening-night sloppiness as it defeated the New Hope Christian men's basketball team, 98-86, Friday at Riehm Arena.

Eric Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) had 25 points and 14 rebounds for the 17th-ranked Raiders, and it was his 3-pointer that untied a 23-all game and started the 16-0 run. SOU made its next three triples after Thompson's, one by Tim Weber (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) and two by Justin Martin (Central Point, Ore./Crater), and the lead ballooned to 62-37 early in the second half before the Raiders went into cruise control.

Weber went 6-for-9 from the field with 18 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Jacob Kaler (Camas, Wash./Camas Valley) made 7 of 10 shots for 19 points and Jordan West (Gymea Bay, Australia/Port Hacking) went 6-for-10 with 15 points and seven rebounds. Brennan Rakoz (Toledo, Wash./Toledo) came off with bench with eight points on 4-for-6 shooting.

SOU's 22-for-39 effort in the first half did not spill into the second, where the Raiders were 16-for-40.

Meanwhile, Calvin Molan's 37 points kept the Deacons (0-3) competitive. He went 12-for-17 from the field and 10-for-11 form the line.

SOU points guard Joel Spear (Adelaide, Australia/St. Michaels) dished out five assists before sitting out the second half.

The second day of the Flagship Inn Classic pits the Raiders against Menlo College at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Oaks were defeated by Oregon Tech, 95-75, in Friday's early game.
