Raiders eliminated in penalty shootout against Corban

SALEM – An all-too-familiar storyline haunted the Southern Oregon soccer team until the very end and chased the Raiders out of the Cascade Conference tournament on a rainy Thursday afternoon.

Playing at Willamette University, third-seeded Corban defeated sixth-seeded SOU in the seventh round of penalty kicks after 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime yielded zero goals.

Both teams were 5-for-6 in the shootout until Corban keeper Kaitlyn Mendenhall made a diving stop of Lisa Elledge (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista)'s liner in the seventh round. On Corban's ensuing chance, Olivia Erskine fooled SOU keeper Kylie Moltzen (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose), freezing her and ending the game with a finessed shot.

The Raiders ended their season with a 5-10-2 record.

Corban (10-6-3) will move on to play at second-seeded Concordia in Saturday's semifinals. Warner Pacific plays at regular-season champion Northwest in the other semifinal.

The Warriors have shut out six of their last seven opponents, a trend that started with a 1-0 win over SOU on Oct. 4.

The troubling part for the Raiders was that they again maintained an advantage in shots, 13-5 in regulation, but could not convert. Only one of the last 10 teams they played got off more shots than them.

Paige Kilpatrick (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley), Avery Dutton (Windsor, Calif./Cardinal Newman), Lauren Aldana (Elk Grove, Calif./Franklin), Allyson Ward (Santa Rosa, Calif./Santa Rosa) and Kendra Madaras-Kelly (Boise, Idaho/Mountain View) made SOU's penalty kicks. Down 4-3, Corban's Emily Anderson converted in the fifth round to force sudden death.

Presley Lambert (Santa Clarita, Calif./Hart) led the Raiders with two shots on goal, but she was limited to 32 minutes due to an injury. Corban only put three shots on goal.

Moltzen earned the shutout for SOU with three saves.

The elimination marked the end of the road for five Raiders: Serena DeChristofaro (Martinez, Calif./Alhambra), Elise De Jesse (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza), Jacquie Galvez (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley), Kilpatrick and Devon Walker (Yelm, Wash./Yelm ).
