ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon University women's basketball team will attempt to rediscover its offensive rhythm this weekend with its last two nonleague games for two months against a pair of California Pacific Conference squads.
Fresh off a week of final exams, the Raiders will head Saturday to Cal Maritime (5-3) and Sunday to Pacific Union (1-8) for two matinee contests. SOU opened Cascade Conference play in Portland last weekend with a couple of down-to-the-wire finishes, losing Friday at Concordia (67-66) and winning Saturday at Warner Pacific (67-63).
Rankings: Their first loss caused the Raiders to drop just two spots to No. 15 in the second NAIA coaches' poll of the regular season, which was released Tuesday by the national office. They're one of 11 teams remaining with one or zero losses. Because of its upset of the Raiders, and an upset the next night of No. 25 Oregon Tech, Concordia snuck into the No. 24 slot as the only other team in the rankings representing the CCC. Undefeated Morningside (Iowa) stayed at No. 1.
Week in review: In the context of this season and last, SOU's offensive performances in the CCC openers should go down as outliers. The Raiders shot 41 and 32 percent from the floor – their previous low this season was 48 percent, and they dipped below 40 just three times last season – while being plagued by 4-for-27 accuracy from 3-point range. Despite that, they would have walked away with a weekend sweep if not for going without a field goal in the final six minutes at Concordia.
One thing that remained consistent was SOU's frontcourt dominance in the paint. They notched 30 points inside both nights and have now outscored their opponents 322-190 in the paint. They also got to the line for a combined 63 free throws while watching Concordia and Warner Pacific shoot 20, and have a cumulative advantage of 243-143 in charity attempts this season.
Carly Meister (Elma, Wash./Elma) played big at WPC with a career-high 27 points, scoring 15 in the second half. It was the eighth 20-point game of her career. At Concordia, freshman post Courtney West (Sydney, Australia/Port Hacking) exhibited continued progress with 11 points and 10 rebounds, marking her third double-double of the season. She is shooting a team-best 67 percent (35-for-52). Meister (13.4 points) and Alexi Smith (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) (13.0) still lead the team in scoring.
About the opponents: The Raiders have already defeated both of these teams this season – 80-48 over Cal Maritime on Nov. 21 in Klamath Falls, and 107-80 over Pacific Union on Nov. 16 in Ashland. They've taken seven straight from Maritime since 2012, all by at least 16 points, and all 11 in the all-time series with Pacific Union, the smallest margin being 11 points in 2011.
Maritime, led by Joie Camalo's 14.6 points per game, comes into the game having won four straight. Pacific Union, led by London Robinson's 11.7 points and 5.6 rebounds, celebrated its only win against Arizona Christian.
Coming up: SOU returns home after this weekend to face a pair a couple of perennial CCC powers at Riehm Arena, Dec. 19 against defending champ Eastern Oregon (8-3) and Dec. 20 against College of Idaho (2-9). Both games will tip off at 5:30 p.m.
