McDermott earns 400th win in SOU's upset of No. 2 College of Idaho

ASHLAND – The 400th victory of Brian McDermott's collegiate head-coaching career was also one of the biggest upsets in his 19 years of leading the Southern Oregon University men's basketball team.

One day shy of a year exactly since College of Idaho knocked off second-ranked SOU in Caldwell, Idaho, the 16th-ranked Raiders returned the favor Saturday night at Riehm Arena by downing the second-ranked Coyotes 77-74.

The Raiders (13-2 overall, 3-1 Cascade Conference) turned again to senior wing Tim Weber (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg), who tallied 21 points, five assists and five rebounds a night after posting his third triple-double of the season in a 114-104 overtime win against Eastern Oregon. Weber went 8-for-11 from the floor, making four of five shots in the second half.

C of I fell to 13-3 and 2-2 in the CCC.

McDermott, who has 283 of those wins at SOU (and the previous 117 at Dakota State (S.D.)), last led the Raiders to an upset of the NAIA's No. 2 team on Feb. 10, 2009 against Oregon Tech.

Freshman guard Ben DeSaulnier (Philomath, Ore./Philomath) came through with the biggest night of his young career: 17 points, five rebounds and three assists. He also sparked the key sequence of the game, coming off a screen to drill a 3-pointer from the right wing and give SOU a 72-69 lead with 3:13 remaining.

Demetrius Perkins got in trouble near the sideline on College of Idaho's ensuing possession. Joel Spear (Adelaide, Australia/St. Michaels) pried the ball away and threw it up court to DeSaulnier, who handed off to Weber for a two-handed slam.

Trailing 76-70 after a pair of Weber free throws, the Yotes gave themselves a chance thanks to Joey Nebeker's four-point play with 2:19 left. They also got stops on SOU's next two possessions but couldn't take advantage. Spear made one of two free throws with six seconds left, putting SOU up by three, and Josh Wilson missed a 3-pointer as time expired.

Four players scored in double figures for the Yotes: Perkins (17 points), Wilson (15), Sydney Donaldson (14) and Joey Nebeker (12). Wilson also had a game-high 12 rebounds.

SOU's bench outscored C of I's, 27-7.

Prior to DeSaulnier's 3-pointer, the game had been tied at six different scores in the second half and the lead had changed hands seven times.

The Yotes lost by the same score on Friday night at Oregon Tech. They hadn't lost two straight since their first two games of the 2013-14 season. They'd also won three straight against the Raiders and 14 of 17 overall in the series.

Last year at Riehm Arena, C of I came back to force overtime and ultimately won 109-100 in the second extra frame.

The Raiders are 4-1 against ranked opponents this season.

Jordan West (Gymea Bay, Australia/Port Hacking) chipped in 13 points and three rebounds, while Spear had seven points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
