SOU splits on final day of Merced tourney

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MERCED, Calif.Tyana Andrews (Rochester, Wash./Centralia) took full advantage of her opportunity to step in at setter and helped the Southern Oregon University volleyball team efficiently pound William Jessup, 25-13, 25-16, 25-8, in the Holiday Inn Express Invitational finale Saturday night.

Earlier in the day, the Raiders rallied to force a fifth set but ultimately lost to Cal State San Marcos, 25-13, 25-20, 22-25, 25-27, 15-13. They'll enter Cascade Conference play at home next Thursday and Friday with a record of 6-2.

Against William Jessup, Andrews accumulated 26 assists, 14 digs, and five kills on 11 attempts. She led the Raiders to a .244 attacking average to Jessup's -.105.

Paulla Pinheiro (Fortaleza, Brazil/Colegio Farias Brito) and Nikki Keller (Carson City, Nev./Carson) both had six kills on nine swings, Motade Atanda (San Jose, Calif./Presentation) had six kills, and Shelby Young (Lincoln, Calif./Whitney) put down five kills on nine swings. Abbie Hanser (Billings, Mont./Billings Central Catholic) chipped in with seven blocks, while Kelsea MacPhee (Klamath Falls, Ore./Mazama) went for career-highs of 10 digs and four service aces.

Andrews was helpful in a losing effort, too, distributing 33 assists with 13 digs. Pinheiro was one kill short of matching a career-best with 20 on 55 attempts and 17 digs.


Atanda added 12 kills and eight digs, Sam Boehnke (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) and Emma Gasman (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan) had six kills apiece, and Brookelynn Cole (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) went for 28 digs.

San Marcos, which lost in four sets to the Raiders last weekend, had three players in double-figure kills, led by Jordan Banich's 18.

SOU will be at Riehm Arena for the first time this year at 7 p.m. on Thursday against Corban. On Friday, they'll host Northwest Christian at 7 p.m.
